Helen Heselwood
Helen HeselwoodSolicitor / Director
Helen studied law at Manchester University. She then went on to complete the Legal Practice Course at The College of Law, Chester. Helen qualified as a Solicitor in 2002 at a large Manchester city centre practice specialising in personal injury.

Helen, along with Ian Grant, established Heselwood & Grant Solicitors in 2015.

Helen is the Compliance Officer for Legal Practice and for Finance and Administration. This means Helen is responsible for risk management and compliance within Heselwood & Grant Solicitors and she has responsibility for the firm’s systems and controls. Helen is also Heselwood & Grant Solicitors Complaints Officer.

Helen leads a niche claimant personal injury department which specialises in clinical negligence, and a range of personal injury claims including; road traffic accidents, accidents at work, fatal accidents, public liability, and criminal injuries.

Helen is mother to two daughters and one cat. When time allows, she enjoys a day in the Lake District and an evening at the theatre.

Ian Grant
Ian GrantDirector
A director of the company who became a lawyer in 1994. Since that period Ian has pursued a career in the law that has covered a variety of teaching and writing. He has taught extensively to trainee lawyers on a variety of legal and practice subjects for colleges, universities and government agencies. His area of knowledge includes civil and criminal litigation, the law of torts contract and immigration law. His main area of expertise however has focused on Wills, Trusts, Tax, and Probate which he has taught, practiced law in and written texts on.

At Heselwood & Grant he deals with a range of high-end estates matters, tax planning and trust establishment as well as Will preparation.

Out of Office
He has a fondness for writing children’s fiction and fantasy books, collecting art and antiques and in what little spare time he has loves to travel.

Ian’s charge out rate is £195.00 per hour.

Heather Cartmell
Heather CartmellHead of Accounts
Heather qualified from Manchester University with a law degree. Following a career interruption caused by the arrival of her two daughters, she became office manager at Cartmells Solicitors in Blackpool for the next twelve years. Following this firm’s merger with Keoghs, she decided to become master of her own destiny and has been a self-employed bookkeeper with an increasing number of varied clients over the last ten years.

In 2015 she was enveloped by the Heselwood & Grant team, where she is happily striving to keep up with the increasing demands of this blossoming firm.

Heather is very bossy but regards this as part of the job description for the office manager of a law firm.

Rachael Walsh
Rachael WalshSolicitor
Rachael studied law at Manchester University. She then went on to complete the Legal Practice Course at BPP, Manchester. She dealt with personal injury matters as a paralegal prior to commencing her training contract. Rachael qualified as a Solicitor in 2010 at a large international law firm specialising in litigation. Rachael has a civil litigation background with 10 years’ experience in this area. Having made the decision to retrain as a private client Solicitor over the last 2 years, she now works in our busy Wills & Probate department.

Rachael deals with a variety of estates both taxable and non-taxable. She has particular experience in dealing with intestate estates and cases involving complex estate administration, multiple properties, missing beneficiaries and those with an international element. She also deals with matters involving large family trees and charitable beneficiaries.

Rachael is approachable and understanding and works hard to provide clear advice on complex issues and progress matters for her clients.

Guy Platon
Guy PlatonSolicitor
Guy studied law at the University of Leeds and subsequently completed the Legal Practice Course at Manchester University. He qualified as a Solicitor in January 2007 and therefore has over 11 years of post qualification experience. Over this time he has predominantly specialised in civil litigation, including fast and complex multi track cases. More recently, Guy has moved over into our Wills & Probate department where he specialises in a range of private client matters including Will drafting, wealth management advice, Lasting Power of Attorney and varied probate including large and complex intestate estates, inheritance tax and Court of Protection work.

Guy is an experienced, personable and attentive practitioner and is keen to deliver the best possible outcomes to his clients.

Marion Smith
Marion SmithParalegal
Marion is an assistant in our Wills & Probate Department, working and assisting in all matters of estate administration and planning. She has a wide range of experience, having worked in the legal profession on and offshore; the experience from which she has capitalised on in her role at Heselwood & Grant.

In her spare time, she is a keen traveller. She loves creative writing and is a very enthusiastic football fan.

Natasha Oglethorpe
Natasha OglethorpeParalegal
Natasha graduated with her law degree from Liverpool John Moores University in 2016 and now has over 2 years of experience working in our Wills & Probate department.

Natasha has approximately 70 files and her duties involve arranging the registration of deaths and funerals alongside conducting research into assets and liabilities of an Estate before collating information to establish its value. Natasha drafts Oaths and conducts inheritance tax reviews before making probate applications. Natasha deals with a variety of estates, both taxable and non-taxable and has experience in dealing with estates with properties and arranges the sale accordingly.

In her spare time Natasha enjoys walking her dogs, and retail therapy. She is well-travelled, and her current favourite destination is Australia, with her ambition being to visit many more parts of the globe in the future.

Natasha’s charge out rate is £125 per hour.

Andrew Byrd
Andrew ByrdParalegal
Having graduated with an English degree in 1992, Andrew has enjoyed a varied employment history teaching in Spain, the United States of America and various schools in the UK. In 2017 he traded in his classroom whiteboard for an office keyboard, and now assists in our personal injury, and Wills & Probate departments.

Out of Office
Andrew enjoys cooking for his family and friends, and is an avid watcher of television cookery programmes. He is a regular visitor to the theatre, art galleries, and museums. He is a keen, but infrequent, golfer, and cyclist.

Andrew’s charge out rate is £125.00 per hour.

Autumn Cordingley

In March 2019, Autumn became a trainee solicitor at Heselwood & Grant Solicitors. She graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with a 2:1 law degree with honours in 2016. With just over two years’ experience as a fee earner, Autumn’s experience has been within civil litigation running her own files.

Having spent 18 months handling RTA litigated personal injury files with a file count of around 200, she has spent the last 8 months handling pre-issue cavity wall claims with a file count of around 100 alongside a small personal injury case load.

In her spare time, Autumn likes to travel with friends, exploring different parts of Europe. She’s an animal lover, and owns a cat called Crystal. Autumn is also a keen keep fit enthusiast.

Alex Penney
Alex PenneyTrainee Solicitor
Alex completed her law degree in 2015 graduating from the University of Leeds with 2:1 with honours. She then began working in a defendant firm in September 2015 working on pre-litigated and assisting a team of 10 solicitors with litigated, suspected fraudulent, personal injury claims.

Alex began her Legal Practice Course in 2016 on a part-time basis and completed this in 2018 with distinction. Alex started at Heselwood & Grant in February 2018 with a case load of approximately 120 pre-litigated cavity wall insulation claims and a small personal injury case load (both pre-litigated and litigated), whilst also assisting Helen Heselwood with more complex litigated personal injury claims. In March 2019, Alex became a Trainee Solicitor at Heselwood & Grant Solicitors.

In her spare time, Alex competes as a synchronised swimmer. Alex also enjoys walks with her dog Walter, and exploring new places.

Jada-Kay Amin

Jada is currently completing her law degree at The University of Law Manchester, with the ambition to complete her Legal Practice Course and qualify as a Solicitor. She joined our Wills & Probate department in April 2018, in which she continues to assist with estate administration while recently expanding to our civil law department to further assist with cavity wall claims.

Out of Office
When not at university, Jada enjoys socialising with friends and spending time with her family. She is a big American TV fan and also loves to travel. Her favourite destinations to date include Barcelona and Dubai.

Amy Goldfinch

Amy is a fully-qualified beauty therapist, and practiced this for three years prior to joining a family-run Solicitors in 2007.

Amy has been a legal secretary for 10 years, starting in family law and then Probate, Trusts & Wills for the last 4 years. Amy has worked within the firm as a legal secretary since 2014, but has successfully completed legal training and is now a paralegal in the Probate, Trusts & Wills department.”

Amy enjoys spending quality time with her three young children and big family. She doesn’t have a lot of time to do anything else, although says uninterrupted sleep would be nice.

Kieran studied Applied Business Studies & ICT at Blackpool & the Fylde College, and upon completion has worked in a variety of jobs which have helped him gain valuable experience in customer and legal services, whilst working with a wide diversity of staff and clients.

Alaina James-Clark

Alaina is originally from the United States of America, and recently returned to the UK from Florida in September. She joined our team in January 2018 with ambitions to get her level 2 business administration, and level 2 legal secretary qualifications. Alaina’s goal is to one day become a Solicitor herself, dealing with family law.

Outside of work she enjoys socialising and activities with her friends such as, going to the beach, and bowling. Alaina’s favourite hobby is singing.

Ottie is worried about the economy because Pedigree Chum is up to £2.00 a can. That’s almost £14.00 in dog money. But she knows that money should not be a barrier to good legal representation, which is why her new best friend is Heselwood & Grant Solicitors.
